Ready to Read & Write: Improve our Pre-K Literacy Centers
My students need lapboards, clipboards and other basic writing and letter-recognition supplies so that they can get ready for kindergarten.

My Students
Please help us get ready for reading and writing in kindergarten! My preschool students are starting to get familiarized with letters and writing. We would like to provide them with different materials to use in our two literacy centers.
My students are active three, four and five-year-olds with developmental delays.
They attend a self-contained program at an elementary school in Nevada. This early intervention program aims to develop skills in their deficit areas. Many of my students will be attending kindergarten soon, and we would like to develop their pre-writing and writing skills as much as possible. My students are currently experimenting with different writing tools to make marks on paper. Many of them have individual goals related to drawing and writing. My students are beginning to develop basic pre-writing skills such as drawing recognizable pictures, lines and shapes.
My Project
Writing supplies such as lapboards, markers, erasers, and magic boards will enable my students to practice drawing and writing. Many of my students had never held a marker before entering preschool. Seeing the looks on their faces as they create lines and shapes, and watching as they develop fist grasps into tripod grasps, has inspired me to request these items. All of the items would have a great impact in my classroom. We would place some in the writing area, which only has pencils, crayons and some old magna-doodle boards. The student-safe clipboards will be placed in other areas of the classroom to encourage them to draw and write about their experiences in our learning centers (science, art, music, blocks, dramatic play, math, etc.). The other alphabet supplies such as puzzles and beads will help my students reinforce the letter concepts that are being taught in our preschool class on a daily basis.
Providing multiple and meaningful writing experiences will encourage my students to develop a love for writing and reading.
These supplies will help us work with them on an individual basis. The materials are portable and will easily be transported to different areas of the classroom when needed. Our students will develop basic pre-writing and cognitive skills that every preschooler needs. We would really like for our students to be ready to enter kindergarten!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
