Ready to Read: Using Student Magazines to Promote Literacy

My students need 30 copies each of 2 magazines.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Gorby's classroom raised $511

My Students

Do you remember the excitement of checking your mailbox as a child, awaiting your favorite magazine--Ranger Rick, Highlights Kids, etc. My students haven't experienced the anticipation of checking a mailbox, awaiting for their favorite magazine to arrive, so they can explore the world.

Having "looped" with my students from fourth grade to fifth grade, I want to prepare my student for the challenges of middle school and beyond.

With the first week of school complete, I have observed the "fruits of my labor," ("the fruits of our labor,") and would like to build on my students newfound belief that college is attainable through hard work, perseverance and knowledge.

My Project

Having recently purchased wooden mailboxes, as well as a subscription to National Geographic Pathfinders Edition for my class, I would like to rotate reader subscriptions and create anticipation around receiving the latest publication. By providing my students with consumable reading materials, I will also be able to bridge the literacy gap that exists between home and school.

My experiences within the urban classroom have demanded an unshakable vision for student success despite obstacles; obstacles that are never greater than what too many of my students face daily--hunger, abuse, neglect and disengagement.

My students--children--are resilient enough to learn, and I am resilient enough to boldly succeed in ensuring their academic success. Please support us in learning about the world, and in the process our community.
