Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ms. G. and Ms. P.'s 4th graders are students in the South Bronx in a DOE Public School. We are co-teachers in an ICT classroom. Our energetic students are located in a diverse neighborhood and come from many different backgrounds. Along with coming from different backgrounds, there is a variety of learning needs. We teach in a 4th grade ICT classroom, which means many of our students have particular learning needs. Their families are concerned of their progression in school and their success not just in academics, but as young people.
Our students are interested in a range of topics from their favorite president, Abraham Lincoln, to learning about animals such as lizards!
In our classroom, we make sure to target students' learning needs as well as explore their interests.
My Project
Our students would greatly benefit from receiving these supplies and books in their classroom. The classroom supplies have a variety of uses from pencils for the students' daily writing tasks in all content areas, markers for creating engaging and informative anchor charts the students can refer to, and paper for printing out centers. The vacuum will be helpful to keep the three rugs in our room clean; this is where the majority of the learning happens in our classroom!
The books will be used to introduce literature circles and help our kids explore a wide variety of characters, challenges and adventures.
Students will have the opportunity to "dine" at a book tasting event and rate the books indicating which one they would most like to read and least like to read. Ms. G. and Ms. P. will help place students into groups based on their interests to lead small group novel studies. Students will be working in teams to keep each other accountable for what they are reading while they follow new characters on their journeys.
With your help, we can continue to have an engaging classroom which promotes learning and self discovery.
