My students need level A books as well as sight word books. We also need read-along stories for our listening center to help with fluency and repetition.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love looking through books and really enjoy learning. Our daily interactive literacy centers consist of the listening center, reading books, learning sight words, and learning letters.
I teach a 12:1:1 class, which is a class of 12 students, one teacher and one classroom teacher assistant.
My students have various disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Speech and Language impairment, and Intellectual disabilities. Some of these children are also ESL. They need to be engaged and have full interaction with all lessons throughout the entire day because of their sensory needs. They all love looking through books, which is an absolute pleasure to see. Our students are high poverty and do not have access to books in their homes. I have 6 empty bookshelves and it is so sad to see. I have a total of 3 bins of books that I brought from my home and some that I purchased.
My Project
My students enjoy looking at pictures and learning how to read. These early readers are learning sight words through interactive centers made by me, but they need to practice and see these words in actual books as text. The only access to leveled books are copies of books from ReadingAtoZ. They are not enjoying colorful illustrations or reviewing their words. While some students are learning their alphabet, others are working on sight words with index cards and other forms of text. These sight word books and early reader books will help these students understand independence and ownership as they are responsible for their own "book baggie" for their "just right" books. The read aloud books with CDs will help students have fun with reading especially with Dr. Seuss rhymes. I can already see their excitement. Please help these children continue their love for books by providing them with a bigger library.
These books will be a tremendous help to our students.
They will benefit from seeing various text and it will help their self-esteem when they realize they really can read! My students need constant repetition and engagement, these read along CDs will be beneficial. Help my students continue their love for reading!
