My Project
Middle school is the perfect time to have students read nonfiction books and increase their literacy by drawing them in with intriguing STEM topics about the natural world! I am requesting a subscription to Coral magazine, and books about fascinating sea animals, habitats, advances in space science, and a few titles in a fun series of small science and math board books that students love to read.
I selected books with captivating photos or drawings, and reading levels accessible to nearly all students, including the many English Language Learners in my classes.
Coral magazine has amazing photos in every issue and will mainly be used in our marine science elective class to keep up with current advances in reef aquarium husbandry, featured animals, and marine environmental science issues.
Throughout the school year I like to rotate our book collection by placing a bunch out on the counters for students to peruse at any time and borrow to read more carefully. The objective is to naturally draw students in, get them asking questions, and guide them toward further research on topics that interest them. They will also want to engage in peer discussion, which will include using academic language and new scientific vocabulary in addition to conversational language.
Colored cardstock makes fine bookmarks, and sticky notes are great for students to jot down ideas or questions to discuss. Leaving comments on books encourages classmates to pick them up. I like to have books grouped around our two tissue stations so students can see mini-displays. We have been out of tissues for a few weeks, and still have a few months of school remaining. I am curious how students will react to the engaging Pythagorean Theorem for Babies book, since I know most of them are studying it in math class now!
