My Project

I’m creating Science Backpacks that will be used for experiential learning in the field—on hikes, schoolyard investigations, and local environmental trips. Each backpack will be stocked with tools to help students become real-world scientists: pocket microscopes, binoculars, field journals, thermometers, magnifying glasses, and first aid kits.

These science kits will give my students the opportunity to observe, collect data, record their findings, and ask deeper questions—just like professional scientists do.

Whether we’re investigating tide pools, identifying birds, testing soil, or tracking the weather, these backpacks will empower students to explore with confidence and curiosity.

Each student will have their own journal, writing tools, and personal supplies, and small groups will share scientific equipment like microscopes, binoculars, and measuring tools. With 12 backpacks, we’ll be equipped for field learning all year long!

My 5th graders are curious, adventurous, and full of wonder about the world around them. They ask thoughtful questions, observe tiny details, and thrive when learning is hands-on. Many of them have limited access to nature and science tools outside of school, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming big and thinking like scientists. I want to provide them with the experiences and tools that will help deepen their connection to science—and to the natural world.
