This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On March 13, 2020, our entire school community was uprooted. I had to tell my students that the Intervention Lab was closed/canceled for the day. Homeroom teachers needed the day to explain to students that the next two weeks they would work independently from home. Students and teachers were very confused with the news but quickly made plans for the continuation of learning. Our entire world was changed within hours. Little did we know that those two weeks would turn into months.
The biggest challenge was our limited technology.
All of my students are below grade level in reading foundational skills and need small group instruction on a daily basis. My goal is to provide remote/distance learning support on a daily basis.
My Project
The first time I set up a Zoom meeting, I was excited/anxious to see my students after several weeks. Little did I know that my old laptop would give me such a hard time. Distance learning has many challenges and one of these challenges is keeping students engaged. My old outdated laptop did not have enough memory for my lessons.
Creating videos and uploading them to my Zoom lessons was a failure.
I was frustrated as were my students. In the middle of lessons, my computer would freeze and it was a waste of time. As much as I would want to keep students engaged, I was failing because direct instruction was glitchy.
The Apple MacBook Pro requested will provide my students with engaging uninterrupted Zoom lessons. This new laptop will provide me with the opportunity to create presentations with videos and images and share them with students to keep them engaged.
