This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 26 of the most amazing fourth-grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!
Many of our students are below grade level by more than one grade level in both reading and math.
Having remote learning due to COVID-19 didn't help matters either. In many instances, they have to take care of siblings while their parents work multiple jobs, or in some cases are at home alone while parents are at work. I try not to make excuses, but literally, life often gets in their way.
My Project
We are supposed to start the 2020-2021 school year in just about three weeks. Unfortunately, we still don't know if it will be in-person teaching or remote instruction. Heck, we still don't have a calendar for the new school year.
If we start with remote learning, I want to make sure I am ready to go from day one with a document camera and good lighting for my distance learners.
Having taught through distance learning for over 3 months in the Spring, I quickly learned that I needed more tech at home.
I know that if I had this digital document camera, I would not just use it to teach math, but the fact that it scans means I can also make digital slideshows to use in review slides and lectures. It will open up the possibilities if we have to do remote learning.
The lighting was a big issue in my small NYC apartment. There were a few hours during the day it was good light, but the rest of the time I was hard to see. Again, I want to make remote learning as seamless and impactful as I can if that is what we have to do.
