Learning to regroup when adding and subtracting is one of the biggest concepts my 2nd graders will learn in Math this year. Help them to grasp this concept and more fully understand place value by supporting us!
My students are halfway through their year in 2nd grade.
They live in a moderate poverty area. Our school has been open since 2006, but because of so many young families in the area, we have nearly 1,000 students at our school. Demands and needs are high with such a big student body, and more students continually coming in.
My Project
The resources I have requested focus specifically on place value and understanding how to regroup when adding and/or subtracting. When I was in elementary I never really grasped the essential understanding of what it means to regroup. I was simply taught the algorithm; the steps to take in order to get the correct answer. I could not explain to you the underlying concept of those steps. I didn't truly understand what I was doing; I just went through the motions of the steps. I do not want that for my students. I want them to have that math understanding, that foundation that will help them as they move on to harder math; this will truly help them to succeed in Math!
I want to do all that I can to ensure that my students fully understand this very important 2nd grade Math concept.
Visual representation and hands-on materials and interaction will greatly increase my students' success. We would greatly appreciate your help!
