My Students
Students need fluency practice. The best way to improve fluency is through repetition. Fluency and comprehension go hand in hand. If students are not fluent, then they will not be able to comprehend what they are reading.
I am a fourth grade teacher at a school in the heart of an urban community.
I have several students who are reading 2 to 3 grades below level. I also have several students who have been retained at least once. They are discouraged and have lost confidence in their abilities as readers. I have students who are reading on level who also need something to push them even higher.
My Project
I want the opportunity for my students to take a more integral part of their own learning. Having the six digital tape recorders will allow them to practice an on level reading selection. They will record themselves and have an opportunity to hear themselves reading. By listening to themselves, they will be able to identify their strengths as well as what they need to work on. They will have the opportunity to reread and record again. Everyone, no matter their reading level, will achieve success because of the repetition. This will help my struggling readers tremendously.
