My Students

I teach kindergarten. I am my students' first teacher in the public school experience. I teach them how to line up, wash their hands, be nice to others and READ. I need to have books on their reading levels that they can take home and read with their families.

My students come from low income families.

We serve free breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner. These families are worried about making ends meet, not about going to the local library to check out books. One student said that she wouldn't be able to go to the library for a book about animals for a class animal report because her mom owed them money. The students in my class would not have a good home library. At this early stage of reading, it is hard to buy new books as fast as they are learning to read. The books that they might have would not be on their new reading level in just one month. This would be a real problem if the family had more than one student on different reading levels.

My Project

My students need 12 leveled book sets that are at their reading levels for our classroom. I would like to be able to send home a new book that is on my students' levels every time they finish a book. I would send these books home so that their families will be able to get involved with their learning to read. The more books that get sent home and returned, the faster and better the student will be at reading. The families will be helping with homework in kindergarten, getting them involved with the school work. When there is help from home, the students improve faster. These students will then be able to move on to the next grade on level and not be behind.

The more students read, the better readers they will become.

My kindergarten class needs books that are on their level of reading and that are colorful and interesting to read. Right now I have to go online and print books off for them to use. These paper books are just not as appealing to the young readers. I'm trying to build a strong reading foundation that will last a lifetime. This foundation can change lives.
