My first grade classroom is located in a small rural farming community in Nevada. The students in my classroom come to school with an eagerness to embrace learning. However, due to the COVID pandemic and the loss of classroom instruction over the last year and a half, many of my students are far below the core academic skills such as letter/sound identification, word decoding and fluency that help them become successful readers. Without these skills, success for these students will continue to be a struggle. My students are eager to learn but need the tools to help them achieve their success.
My students come to class with a wide range of academic abilities that require a variety of learning tools including hands on manipulatives such as magnetic letters, word building manipulatives and access to leveled reading materials at their level through both print and digital resources.
My Project
As beginning readers, these hands-on tools will help my students turn their knowledge of sounds and letters into the words they need to be successful readers. Students will work individually and in pairs using the magnetic letters, words and sentence strips to build their phonemic awareness necessary to become strong, confident readers.
The leveled readers will provide a variety of accessible reading for every reader in my classroom.
These books will provide a print rich environment that I strive to create in my classroom to foster a love of reading.
