My public school classroom is located in a very very very small rural high-need community. The middle school and high school combined serve approximately 85 students. I teach classes in grades K-12, but am currently focusing on 7th and 8th grade middle school classes (a total of 13 students who know each other better than they know themselves) in Reading, Writing, and Technology Skills.
Much of our curriculum is dated and we struggle to keep high interest materials available for our influx of reluctant readers, many of whom do not understand a world outside of our small community, which is approximately 200 miles away from any major city.
With this magazine, they would enjoy the added benefit of a high interest magazine with a strong English, Social Studies, and Technology connection that would allow them to interact appropriately with students from across the United States on the Weekly Reader blogging sites about the material they are reading, as well as participating in reader responses, opinions, and discussion boards. This age and interest appropriate magazine would not be blocked or access denied on our school's website.
Your help will empower our students to read various forms of literature (accredited by the National Council of Teacher of English) and the world from a different perspective as they interact with other students from various places and backgrounds, while forming a love of reading, writing, social studies, and technology.
