My Students
These materials are for a new group of 4th graders next year! My favorite part of teaching is helping my students develop a love for learning! Our school is amazing, and it is a very warm and inviting place. We have a wonderful community of teachers, parents, and students working hard every day to help everyone succeed.
My school has a very diverse population of students and families.
We are located in what some call a bedroom community, because parents work farther from home. Some of our students are low income, English Language Learners, come from single-parent homes, or are living with other guardians. It can be challenging meeting the needs of the varying abilities and backgrounds of the students, but it is something I enjoy doing. I am looking to instill a love for learning in my students.
My Project
The books Castle in the Attic and Streams to the River, River to the Sea will be used as part of a whole class book study through a program called CIA By Read Side by Side. The students will be reading to self and following along as I read. I will be pausing throughout the text to ask the students questions about what we just read to encourage comprehension through skills such as making inferences, connections, and predictions. Students will be given a sentence stem to use as they turn and talk with their assigned reading partner.
Students will be collecting evidence, interpreting the text and applying what they have learned to determine the authors message.
We will be writing retell summaries together as well as determining the theme of the books and the author's message. Students will be challenged to think about how the theme and author's message fits into their life.
