I teach Kindergarten in a low-income inner city school. The students I serve are regularly on the under-served side of equity issues in our district. We are last to receive added staff, updated materials and teacher training. Student materials are outdated and often replaced by teachers out of their own pockets.
Students in my school do not have the resources or the community support to gain the knowledge we are trying to help them grasp. They will not make the gains or close the gaps or seek higher education without our push. We work every day to try to inspire and challenge children in our school to see their own potential, and to take responsibility for that potential. Materials available to students that are clean, relevant and motivating to students help us with this process.
We could use math materials that are appealing and motivating to students. Manipulatives that are engaging and encourage children to explore can build their interest and their confidence in their abilities.
