My school is a public school located in Malden, MA. We are a K-8 school, with 897 students currently enrolled. Students at this school come from a variety of economic backgrounds. About 62% of students come from low-income families. Students also speak a multitude of languages such as English, Chinese, Spanish, French Creole, and Portuguese. At our school, we recognize and celebrate our diverse students.
No matter what kind of background my students come from, they always come into the classroom with huge smiles on their faces, ready to learn.
My main goal is to help my students love school. I strive to help them build that foundation to become life-long learners. I want my students to always have positive memories of their year in kindergarten!
My Project
For this project, I am requesting activities my kindergarten students will use during literacy centers and guided reading groups. These centers will help my kiddos master important literacy skills, encourage independence, and give them the confidence they need for success!
Literacy skills that are learned in kindergarten are extremely important in helping them become successful readers and writers.
All of these centers are hands-on and visual, which is how kindergartners learn best! Having hands-on and visual activities are especially beneficial for English Language Learners and those learners that need some extra support. These centers will help my kiddos with letter/sound recognition, rhyming, blending words, reading sight words, word families, and digraphs.
My students will use the Roll & Read Phonics games to practice decoding new words focusing on vowel sounds, blends & digraphs, and word families. They will use the Phonics Magnetic Word Building Boards to practice building words sound by sound, including CVC words and challenging words with blend and digraphs. This center is great for differentiation, as it also includes picture magnets with familiar images. The Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center will help my students to master all high frequency sight-words we learn throughout the year. It’s also a great activity to help them practice reading sentences.
With your help, my kindergarten students will develop a love for literacy and become enthusiastic readers!
