The project that I am proposing is Ready, Set, GROW! We will create a classroom garden in my 5th grade Science classroom so that my students can have a hands-on learning approach to gardening, agriculture, and garden ecology.
It is very difficult to teach garden ecology to 5th graders so why not make it "real" to them and a hands-on project. Where not only do they do all of the work themselves but they learn in the process. This way, they learn the material and they are so proud of what they have accomplished and take pride and ownership in their work/project.
In order to complete this project, I will need the basic gardening tools along with a water source, pots, soil, seeds and somewhere to store our materials. Each student group will be responsible for planting a specific fruit, vegetable, grass, etc... Each group will keep a daily journal of observations about their garden and what they have planted. My students will be responsible for watering, re-potting and making any changes necessary to our classroom garden.
I want to not only give them the knowledge and material required but I want to give them the life experience of "doing" it as well. Then at the end of each 9 weeks, if we have enough of a "crop" we will have a 5th grade cookout using our very own class grown fruits and vegetables and herbs. What a better way to learn? Hands-on, real-life experiences and so much fun too!!! Thank you for your consideration! I guarantee that my 5th grade classes will not let you down as a donor! Thank you.
