Have you ever noticed how kindergarten and first grade students are always excited to go to school and to learn and play, but as children age, they tend to lose their zeal and excitement for school? I have noticed this as well, because we have taken so much of the fun out of the school day.
I want to use STEM and art materials the first 15 minutes of the day to set the tone for the entire day.
Usually upper grade students are given worksheets to start their day, but I think beginning the day building, engineering, creating, and exploring through hands on materials will bring that excitement back to my classroom and make my students excited to come to school again.
I plan to use the building and art materials as morning work for my students to get them thinking, learning and exploring and warming up their minds, preparing for them to learn. The headphones will help to block sound if it's too loud for my students to concentrate, and give them access to digital resources, especially books, that they can use in the mornings as well.
