My Students
My track and field students are learning how to sprint, but without starting blocks they are unable to learn the proper techniques which will always leave them one step behind others.
I feel Track and Field is one of the most important activities offered at our school because it is all-inclusive.
Track and Field lets anyone and everyone who wishes to, participate in the events. Track and Field does not cut anyone and we encourage all students to participate. We have students from the highest academically gifted levels to low end resource students, some with learning disabilities. This has helped strengthen relationships among the different school groups, ethnic groups, and academic levels. They all work together as part of a team. It has also helped increase students' self esteem and self awareness.
My Project
Track and Field offers 13 events with at least 10 students per gender on each event, therefore there is ample room for a lot of participation. We have had difficulty attracting students to perform in some of the varied events because we don't have the necessary equipment the students need to learn the event. Track equipment is expensive, even though I am requesting modest priced starting blocks. If we could get the requested funding and purchase the needed equipment, we would be able to have more students participate in these events thus making even more opportunities for students.
We are a small school competing against bigger schools in the district which results in less funds.
A lot of our district funds have been cut over the past couple of years due to the economy. I am excited to see the growth of our Track and Field program, but the lack of funding makes it considerably difficult to keep up with the demand of more students. It is very important to include all students who want to participate and we need this equipment to allow more opportunities for the kids.
