it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ~ Arthur C. Clarke. The beauty of this quote is that it sums up the relationship most of my third graders have with technology... it IS magic.
I work with a lovely group of 8-9 year olds in a densely populated urban neighborhood outside of Los Angeles.
Our school is located in an area of extreme poverty where 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. But in all other respects they are typical 8-year olds: mischievous, hard-working, enthusiastic, kind, silly, hilarious and curious. They are as wonderful as third graders all over the world, but they also struggle to have things most of us take for granted, like technology. With the advent of smartphones, many of the students and their parents are becoming more savvy, but this has not yet translated into more advanced uses of technology like coding. My students are eager to learn and see each new lesson as an adventure which is why I would like to be able to bring the 'magic' of coding to my classroom.
My Project
Learning to code will open up the world of technology for my students. As most of them do not have a computer at home, their access to technology and the internet has been limited to cellphones and what we are able to do in class. None of them have had the opportunity to delve more deeply into what they can do with technology, and giving them this robot will do just that.
Working with the Dash robot will give my students a chance to be creative problem solvers while they learn to code.
It is open-ended in what it is able to do, which means it will be useful for a very long time and in a variety of circumstances. Individual students can program it on their own while it will also be useful for groups to work on coding together. It gives them a platform that makes technology simple and accessible, helping them grow more confident in their abilities while allowing them to solve problems in innovative and creative ways.
