Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This project is for the inaugural 7th grade Civics classes at a K-8 center. Recently, these classes finished a project that involved interviewing immigrants in regards to the immigration and naturalization process. The interviews were recorded with video, audio, or text depending on the student’s access to technology at home. A few students, with access to video camcorders at home, expressed great enthusiasm for the possibility of interviewing someone on camera. Civics offers an abundance of opportunities for students to present on various topics such as a compromise in the Constitution, a monologue of an American colonial ranting against the British Crown, a mock trial of a Supreme Court case, a congressional debate on civil liberties, or a UN Security Council speech about the effectiveness of embargoes. The presentation format is a powerful education tool, but it has a few shortfalls. Once a presentation is over there is no record left except a filled out scoring rubric and the students’ notes. Any students who were absent from school that day will never get the opportunity to see their classmates presentation. Furthermore, parents do not get to see the presentation their son or daughter worked so hard on. However, there is a way to solve all of these shortfalls. The “We the People” project is a great example. First, students are placed in groups and given complex questions relevant to the influences and design of American government. They then research the questions and create a presentation answering the questions. The class learns about each topic through watching the presentations of their peers. After the presentations are completed there is an assessment activity. A classroom digital camcorder would transform the presentations from a one-time event to a teaching tool that the students could easily access. Digital video is a wonderful medium because it is such a flexible format. Once the presentations are on a digital medium they can be placed on a secure school web site for students to review them at home. Students who were absent can watch the presentations they missed. Furthermore, the process of recording, editing, and publishing the presentations is very educational in itself for students who don’t have access to technology at home. With this donation you can greatly improve the quality of these Civics classes and get a one-of-a-kind Best of Civics Class Presentations DVD.
