Ready! Seat! Go!

My students need alternative seating. It allows them to find comfortable spaces that foster creativity. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.

My Students

I teach students with mild to moderate disabilities in the resource classroom. My students attend general education classes throughout the day and are with me from 21% to 60% of their school day. During that time they learn individualized skills that help them compete with their peers who are the same age and at the same grade level. I love them all and hope to be an inspiration to each one of them.

I hope they discover why they are on this planet.

They cannot always see the world in a positive light, but I believe we are all here for a reason. I think we all have something we are meant to do in this world, for this world. So, as my class is full of the speech impediments, lack of social functioning, and math and reading struggles, they can learn and have made tremendous progress socially and academically.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class – without moving mountains of heavy desks to establish eye contact. As a special education teacher, I would like to engage my students in a learning environment that promotes community. Alternative seating encourages them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.

The seats I have chosen are comfortable and can be cleaned daily.

The boundary chair has 5” back and sides that create a soft, flexible wall that provides tactile feedback. Supports children who have trouble sitting still to reduce disruption in the classroom. Another seating option is bean bag chairs. These chairs will help to create clearly defined collaboration spaces so students can communicate in a functional manner.

I want to provide a classroom environment conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. The seating options I have chosen are great ways to implement sensory needs in the classroom and help the students stay on track. In addition, creating a safe, clean environment with sensory driven decor that is aesthetically pleasing will make students more abt to learn and take pride in the learning environment.
