"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." — Dr. Seuss
We are group of students who are learning more and more about how to love books! Our interests are growing and we need a place to group together and talk to each other.
My students are generally struggling readers who need a lot of exposure to books.
Even though our school is 62% economically disadvantaged, it does not mean they are not thirsty for knowledge. I have been growing my classroom library with a variety of genres and we have been reading and sharing with each other more and more.
My Project
I envision a carpet large enough to accommodate a class of 10-12 fifth grade students where we can all sit together for a read aloud or a book talk. This would also allow for a space for my students to stretch out independently or sit in groups in a comfortable setting.
The bean bags would offer a spot for independent reading around the room in a spot of their choosing.
Having a gathering place will allow us to sit together as a group and practice respectful discussion practices and become more comfortable speaking and sharing ideas with each other.
My classroom would have a gathering place that will meet the needs of growing fifth graders.
We will all be able to sit together as one unit instead of in small groups on different days. They will become better speakers and listeners because coming together daily would now be an option and can be practiced. The time can be used for instruction as well as book talks.
