I am a first year special education teacher and I work primarily with students who are struggling readers. These students are below grade level, however they are eager to learn and work hard. Our school is a Title I school and many of our students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The students I work with have had their share of difficulties to begin with and have been negatively impacted by Covid-19. They missed instructional time when schools were shut down in 2020 and have been working hard to catch up.
My Project
Many of my students are still feeling anxious and unsure about the events of the Covid-19 pandemic. Providing my students with a safe and comfortable library will help them to find a place where they can relax and escape with a book all while learning valuable lessons about life and how to deal with emotions and situations that are beyond their control.
My library will provide comfortable seating, books to read, and writing and drawing materials in a calm space where students can feel safe and free to be themselves.
