My students need 60 copies of outstanding chapter book titles.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lee's classroom raised $502
This project is fully funded
I teach (all subjects) 2nd grade in a small inner city school, where 91% of the students participate in the free lunch program and 49% are English as a Second Language learners.
Students will read 3 out of 10 outstanding books for the year. These books will come from the award-winning book list. Student will apply technology projects to help them meet the state standards in reading and technology.
First I will obtain a copy of the outstanding book for each student. Then I will read the first two chapters to the students, to start the discussion. Next, in the beginning the students will read the first two chapters in the classroom, to start the discussion. Then they will take home to read each night. The following days we discuss, reread parts of the chapters and begin our technology projects.
1st Tech Project- A Character Web Student will use “Kidspiration” software to make a character web of all the characters, adding new characters as we encounter them.
2nd Tech Project- Book Poster Students will make a book poster using Excel. Items can be added as we read further into the book. When they are done these posters will be published and hung in the hallway to encourage others to read the book.
3rd Tech Project- A Letter to the Author Students will write a short letter to the author with their observations and comments about the book using Word Document.
4th Tech Project- Critic’s Review Students will write a short review of the book. These will be hung hung in the classroom.
Since our school is small, so is the budget that the school gets. Especially this coming year with the State's large education budget cuts. It has been a challenge to introduce outstanding literature to my class because of our limited resources.
I hope to introduce outstanding literature to all my students. I truly believe even the most reluctant reader and writer would get excited about creating something they can call their own. This project would build their confidence as writers, improve their reading fluency and read in a manner approximating natural speech. I also hope to close the achievement gap and teach media technology to all my students.
Please consider donating money for the 60 outstanding chapter books. I can assure you that with the investment that you make, all the students in my class will be active participants in using outstanding literature to develop their oral language and reading skills.
