This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love coming to school each day and seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of my students. School is not easy for them, yet as soon as they enter our classroom, they are eager for the day to begin. They know there are expectations to be met, schedules to follow, and lessons to be learned. In addition, they know they will be fed, cared for, and be held accountable for their choices.

“Strive for progress, not perfection.” (Unknown) I tell my students that it is in little steps where we see big changes.

Learning doesn't happen overnight; it takes practice and time to do our best.

I am excited to be one of the few teachers that are building the foundation of our school; this is the first year for us. As of now, we are a K-2 school, but will be building onto our school each year. Our student population come from homes that are below the poverty line, where 90% of the families are economically disadvantaged. The majority of our students come from homes where the only language spoken by their parents is Spanish.

My Project

My students work hard throughout our day, but still struggle with the language; these struggles impacts their progress in reading, writing, and listening. Throughout our day, I share my thinking when it comes to our learning, in the hopes that they will begin to understand the thought process that is needed to check their understanding. The Developing Writing Skills Charts will be used throughout our week with the writing process. This chart set will be helpful for my students to see how I can organize my thoughts before writing, while giving them the opportunity to follow along, see it on the graphic organizer, and write it for themselves. The use of the Sound Phone will give my students the ability to hear themselves read without doing it in a loud tone. They struggle with reading and fluency, so by using this phone, it will give them the practice for speaking their words with less distractions to those around them.

The donations for this project will greatly improve the skills, motivation, and confidence of my students.

I have also asked for a variety of folder games to develop the skills needed to boost their reading and language skills while building their confidence. In addition, I have asked for the first few sets of SnapWords. SnapWords will provide a visual and kinesthetic approach to learning sight words. SnapWords will give them the opportunity to capture the whole word as a picture, as well as assigning a specific body movement to help them remember and understand.

I firmly believe that the items I have chosen will be used weekly in my classroom and will spark some excitement for them. My hope is to provide an environment where my students gain a lifelong love of reading and learning, and in turn, can share their knowledge with their families.
