My Students
Guinea Pigs, LeBron James, Scooters and One Direction - these are a few of the topics my students want to research, but the print resources in our library are limited. However, the number of high-interest, well-written materials for students on the web is increasing by the minute.
Our school is a large public middle school in Oregon that has received awards for the excellent progress our students have made, despite the fact that the majority of our students come from homes with an income below the national poverty level.
Many of my students don't have access to computers or online learning resources at home. My students that lack these experiences are years behind their peers in skills necessary to locate research information online.
My Project
One of most effective ways to improve students' literacy skills is by providing them with access to current, high-interest materials at their individual reading level. Having 10 laptop computers will give students in my class daily opportunities to use a wide variety of reading and research resources that I have made available to them in a digital library.
My students have always been highly motivated to share their writing with each other. I have found that using a class blog has been a compelling way for students to give and receive feedback on their writing. With improved access to computers, my students will be able to use the class blog more frequently.
Additionally, laptops would make it possible for my students to connect with their peers around the world to exchange ideas about what they are learning using various websites.
10 laptops will not only provide my students with access to current resources for reading, writing, and research, but will also give them the necessary technical skills to maximize their own learning opportunities in the future.
It's time for my students to begin learning how to do research in the digital age.
