Help me give my students the tools and games they need to build their literacy skills in Chinese with activities such as the Primary Concepts sensory writing!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from new immigrant families as well as second generations families in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The majority of students are from China. They are currently participating in our Chinese Dual Language classes where they are becoming literate in two languages.
Many students are Multilingual learners and some are learning Mandarin in our Chinese Dual Language Program for the first time.
We are happy to try and foster learning for curious language learners who do well with hands on activities experiential learning.
My Project
We'd like to supplement our literacy centers with language rich games and activities that are fun for students. During literacy center time in Chinese, they will have opportunities to practice forming and recognizing characters. For example, they can use the Primary Concepts Letter concepts to help tactile letters with the formation of Chinese characters.
Some of the games and activities can help bring Chinese characters to life.
Students will be able to manipulate and play with blocks and pictographs that will help them build their vocabulary. These skills will help students build their phonics, reading and writing skills in Chinese.
Our kindergarten students will benefit from hands on activities to help support the learning and practice of Chinese while also helping them in the development of their fine motor skills.
