My Students
As we were growing up reading and writing took us to a brand new world, outside of what we knew. I want my students to be able to do the same but at the same time they need to be able to comprehend what they are reading and define unknown words.
My students come from a high poverty, low income community.
There is lack of community and family support. Majority of my students come to school with lack of materials and background knowledge needed to succeed. But they do come ready to learn and ready to do what ever it takes to succeed. They understand that they want to do better and become high school and college graduates.
My Project
I have requested context clues, affixes and multiple meaning word activity centers. These centers will help increase vocabulary skills, which in turn increases comprehension and writing. I have also requested nonfiction literacy centers. These centers will help student not only learn and become accustom to going back into text to find answers but will increase their knowledge in other genres. Lastly, I have requested practice journals and paragraph builders. These will help increase students interest in writing an increase their very low writing skills.
These activities and centers will help students increase basic comprehension skills needed to succeed in fourth grade and in life. Students will be able to strengthen vocabulary and use those vocabulary skills during reading to increase comprehension of texts.
These materials will give my students the opportunity to learn by doing.
These centers will create an atmosphere of learning and having fun. Students will create their own paragraphs, create their own journals and strengthen comprehension skills such as plot and character analyze.
So in advance, on be half of my students and myself, thank you for all that you are doing and plan to do in the future. Remember all children deserve the same education no matter their economic status.
