My students come from a variety of backgrounds. They are very diverse as our school services a coastal area that is rapidly growing and changing. Many of my students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them come to school with few educational experiences other than what they receive within school walls; and with concerns to meet everyday needs, many of them have become disengaged with reading or learning to read. They need a reason to want to read again. They need to be motivated to use literature as a window to the outside world so they can become sponges and soak up as much information as they can. The materials purchased from Storyworks could help these students learn to love reading again!
My Project
The students of this fourth grade classroom are quite diverse when it comes to strengths, weaknesses, interests, and performance levels. The subscription to Storyworks purchased by this project would be instrumental in meeting the diverse reading and writing skills and needs of my students. Each student would get their own magazine (which in itself motivates them and engages them in the text with colorful illustrations and text features). The magazines include a variety of genres on a multitude of topics that include a little something for everyone! The tasks with the texts also prepare students for requirements on tests and down the road.
