This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th graders live in a Northwest side neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. We are part of a very large public school district and Hispanic population. My class receives free lunch based on low family income. My students are diverse learners and second language learners with cultural backgrounds from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other South American countries.
We are a very proud and diverse classroom family that strives for excellence and always gives their best!
My class is an ELA classroom that consists of second language learners that struggle to stay engaged and that consists of many diverse learners that have various learning disabilities such as ADHD.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library has always been a place that my students really enjoy and it promotes independent reading! By adding these books into our classroom community, it will give my students an opportunity to empower themselves and others and create meaningful engagement throughout the day.
Improving literacy attitudes and outcomes, one book and one conversation at a time.
By reading For Black Girls like Me by Mariama J. Lockington from Amazon, it will empower my students to be leaders as it explores the complexities of family, race, sisterhood, and belonging. By reading El Deafo by Cece Bell from Amazon, student empathy and understanding will grow and begin to create lifelong friendships with peers that bring out only the best in each another. Students will better understand they are not alone with their struggles, like the character Zoey in Benefits of Being an Octopus by Ann Brandon from Amazon and will learn how to overcome them.
Every book that is placed in our library is treated with love and care. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. Celebrating reading every day in our classroom will create students who are passionate, inspirational and have lifelong love of reading.
