My Students
My students are funny, smart, charismatic, curious, polite kids that learn how to be responsible little leaders each day we spend together. My kids come from low income/high poverty and don't have much. Most of my students are below level in Reading. Half of them are still reading on a Kindergarten level in 2nd grade. They need help and motivation to get excited about reading.
During the Louisiana flooding, my personal AR library books were destroyed and they were a HUGE motivation for my students to read.
Without being able to motivate my struggling readers, they will continue to struggle in reading.
My Project
My students are struggling readers. Most of them are reading at the beginning of Kindergarten level in 2nd grade. Several students are also repeaters. Reading is difficult for them. They often lose interest or the desire to learn how to read because of their struggles. I have always tried to motivate and encourage reading by getting them excited about reading. One of the ways I do this by, is using the Accelerated Reader program at our school. I purchased, labeled and leveled lots of books for students to have an AR library in my classroom. All of my books that were on the 2nd grade reading level got wet and were destroyed. My students have been asking since the first week of school about taking AR tests.
By donating to our project, my students will regain their desire to read, to comprehend the story and have discussions about the book!
Each one of the big books has an AR test to accompany it. I will read the book to the students during our whole group time. Students will then read the book with a partner in centers and then act out and retell the story with the story kits. This will help the students with their comprehension of the story. The students who struggle to read some words in the story will be able to use their retell of the story and my read aloud to help them when approaching a tricky word.
