My third grade students attend an inner city charter school. The school is small and feels like a family. We are going through many changes and working hard to meet our goals.
The students are kind, willing to learn, and open to change.
They want to soak up knowledge and new experiences. By the time they walk into school, many of them have overcome the struggles of poverty, broken homes, and homelessness. Our charter school strives to meet all needs of our learners. We are a small school with big futures.
My Project
Earlier this year, my third grade class decided they wanted new chapter books. They made a list and I wrote a project. At that time they said, "We are going to read them one at a time as read alouds. We will learn how to read better and learn new words. We will use the books respectfully. We will make sure we are not fake reading and just flipping through the pages." They asked again for more chapter books to read with friends. This time some of the requested books are Rump, Flora and Ulysses and Wayside School is Falling Down.
The books will challenge our reading skills!
We can learn the plot, the characters and see how the books end. The books can help us understand what the author is trying to tell us."
The books were chosen by the class as books they wanted to read such as Bad Kitty and Who Would Win, as well as some titles I chose for small groups. We can't wait to add them to our book collection.
