This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 1st graders in a low-income area in New York City. Most of them don't have grade-level books readily available to them and believe it or not, most do not have a library card. Therefore, a love of reading is very difficult to instill in them. I want them to be excited to come to their guided reading group and learn how to read a book that is geared toward their independent or instructional level. One way to do this is to encourage them to become excited and enthusiastic toward reading by incorporating technology and reading books on a Kindle. I don't think any student would be opposed to reading a book on a Kindle!
My Project
Enjoy Reading with Kindles!!
My students need 8 Kindles for guided reading.
"Enjoy reading? Who enjoys reading?" As a 1st grade teacher, one of my main goals is to have my students read for enjoyment...not read because they HAVE to.

During guided reading, students are in homogeneous groups based on their reading levels. One group is with me, their teacher, being taught how to read a book one or two levels higher than their current level. Reading on a Kindle will provide an opportunity for students to be excited and motivated to read; not just read because their teacher asks them to.
Reading books on a Kindle will make such a difference in my students' lives.
If you ask the average elementary aged child what they like to do for fun, you will hear a variety of responses including, playing video games, playing Barbies/dolls, going to the movies, watching TV, playing board games, etc. One activity is never on their list--READING! My goal is to instill a love of reading into my students.
