My Students

Learning to read by using a textbook is so heartbreaking for me to watch. This will be my first year getting to teach reading to my 5th graders, and I want to not just teach them good reading strategies...I want to take them on a literary adventure with Roald Dahl.

I teach 5th grade in an urban school in Georgia.

My students are reluctant readers, and I can't blame them. The school system for many years now hasn't fostered a love for reading, but a mandatory need for it. I teach writing and science, but this year will be adding reading to my plate. In the past, I have been able to turn my student's views of writing around by creating an environment that engages, challenges, and supports them. Last year, I started a book group with a number of African American boys in my grade to address the lack of diversity in chapter books, especially regarding African American males. From that book group, I learned that my students understand more than we give them credit for about the way the world works, and that they have a love for reading...they just need someone to provide the books, the reason, and the place to discuss them.

My Project

For so long now in our public schools, reading has been done to answer the questions that follow for a grade, and I want to change that view. I want to attempt to start with an author's study of 4 books by Roald Dahl. My students need high quality children's literature to read such as The BFG, Matilda, and The Witches, so that I can teach while fostering a love for reading. These were books that I remember as a kid grabbing me and taking me away from my small town in Georgia. My hope is that as a 5th grade community, we can read these books and practice the strategies of good reading while analyzing the author as a writer. By having book studies, my students can engage in literature circles and begin discussing literature, arguing about literature, making connections, and gaining a deeper understanding.

Your donations to my classroom will provide me an excellent opportunity to create amazing readers and writers in my class.

By providing my class with book sets, we will be able to read books as a class or in groups, engage in discussions, address confusions, and celebrate in our accomplishments together. You will be helping to create a community of readers, writers, and future book club members of the world.
