My Students
Imagine being a fifth grader who struggles to read first grade level content. Imagine that the only books you are able to read are also written at a first grade interest level. Would you be motivated to read? This is the problem we are having in my class. We need interesting, yet readable materials.
I have a self-contained class for students with mild mental disabilities and severe learning disabilities.
My students are typically in third, fourth, and fifth grades. Our school is a low-income school with the majority of students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have low parental and community involvement. My students love to learn, but many factors have disrupted their progress. By the time they reach me, they are often so far behind that it is incredibly difficult for them to catch up. My students are typically struggling readers, reading two to four grade levels behind.
My Project
I am requesting 12 subscriptions to the second grade level Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. These magazines feature non-fiction articles written about current events. Most importantly, the articles are written near my students reading levels. Too often, by the time students reach me, they have given up on reading. One of the main reasons for this is often the boring, dry reading material they have been forced to read in the past. The materials available on their reading level are often considered "babyish" by the students and they do not want to read them. These materials will be interesting to the students and will motivate them to work on their reading skills. Getting my students interested in reading is the first step in helping them develop basic reading skills.
It is very difficult to find reading materials that will interest my students that they are also able to read independently.
These subscriptions will give us new reading material every week that my students will enjoy. Once they actually enjoy reading, they will work harder to develop their skills.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
