My students need a good, dependable rug to sit on during reading time each day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade(all subjects) in a low socio-economic area of the Bronx. Many of our students reside in the project buildings surrounding the school as well as in the low income homes in the surrounding neighborhood. Many of the children come to school and see it as a place of peace and serenity from the tough neighborhood that they reside in. We have a 100% minority population and many of our students are English Language Learners.
When our school expanded by adding two more grades to it, many of us had to move our classrooms and could not use the supplies that we had because of spacing issues. I am requesting a new reading rug to accommodate the new surroundings and space and to add life and student excitement to a very small classroom.
Literacy is an integral part of the first grade curriculum. We read plentifully each and everyday. Students should have an area in our room where they can enjoy reading. This can be both teacher guided and independent. I want out reading area to be inviting to my students and let them feel relaxed and eager to read.
Having a common reading rug will build a sense of reading as a community of learners within the classroom. It can be a common area to conference and share information about books. A warm and inviting classroom setting boost interests in learning.
Please help me to generate an interest in reading and a cozy place to read for these first graders. There is no better time than now to begin to love to read. It is something that can lead to great things in the lives of these children.
