My Project

Nothing draws children over to a book basket quite like a cute stuffed animal peeking out. I’m always searching for ways to “hook” my students to try a new book. Stuffed animals catch their eye even more than interesting book covers - just look at the displays at big box book stores for confirmation! I believe my students will be so excited to read to their stuffed reading buddy over and over again. Research over the past two decades has identified repeated reading as the key strategy for improving students' fluency skills, and I am certain that my students will enjoy reading these stories over and over again to their stuffed reading buddy.

In kindergarten, I have many readers who are not confident to read out loud, but I have found that kids are not self-conscious about stumbling over words when reading to a stuffed friend, and for my speed-demon page-flippers, reading aloud is a good strategy to slow them down to a comprehension-friendly pace.

Anything that helps my young students joyfully embrace their role as a reader is worth exploring. Giving my students the opportunity to read and then re-read the same text, and having them practice their reading orally will help my students become fluent readers.
