My Students
I just finished my first year of teaching second grade, and one of the most important things I learned is that as a teacher, I need to hook my kids on reading as QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!!!
I teach at a small, diverse school in Washington state.
My school is classified as a high-poverty school, with many students on the free or reduced-price lunch program. My classroom of second grade students is always made up of a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. From learning support students, to English language learners, to gifted students, I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!
My Project
My students are coming to me fresh out of first grade. In first grade, they work hard at learning HOW to read, and practicing all of the important skills that build the foundation of their reading life. In second grade, I have to show my students that reading can be FUN and a moving life experience! One of the BEST ways to do that is to introduce my students to book series that have interesting, engaging, and fully developed characters. That is why I am requesting a variety of titles from some AWESOME book series that are PERFECT for my second graders! I am asking for titles from the Katie Woo, Dragon, Mercy Watson, Poppleton, George and Martha, and The Zack Files series. The multiple copies of the books I am asking for will allow my students to read books together within our reading workshop. Kids at this age LOVE to read together and talk about the books they are reading, which will DEFINITELY help build a love of reading!
The other great thing about these books is that each series is at a different reading level, which means that my students will be able to read and grow with these books!
This will be especially beneficial for my students who are struggling with reading because they will begin by reading the lower level series and as they strengthen their reading skills, they can move to a different, higher level series! My number 1 goal as a teacher is to get my students to LOVE READING! Thank you for your help!
