Reading Today for a Brighter Tomorrow

My students need classroom sets of novels for novel studies, high interest books in the classroom library, and materials to help me guide them to be better readers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Jurca's classroom raised $385

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students have not yet discovered that reading can be fun and interesting as well as informative. They see it as something dry and dull that must be done to pass a class or complete homework. I want to give them the opportunity to discover exciting books that make them think, laugh, and even cry!

My students are ESL students who speak a language other than English in the home.

Because they lack the linguistic competence that their classmates have for reading and writing, they often struggle in school. In order to become better readers, my students need access to books that they can enjoy reading. Reading, especially enjoyable reading, can allow students to expand their vocabularies and learn new language structures- often without their realizing it!

My Project

The books that I have requested will allow me to conduct full class novel studies and add some books of high interest to my classroom library. The sight word cards would help me to build literacy for students who come with no formal education. Finally, I have also requested two teacher guides- one to aid me in constructing a reading program with focused assessment for my students and another to help me teach my students the 21st century skills that they will need to be successful in their futures.

Without access to appropriate reading materials, my students will have a hard time acquiring the skills that they need to graduate high school and go on to college.

Literacy is so important to their future that they need to begin building a strong foundation now. The materials from this project can help me interest and inspire students in reading, as well as assist me in helping them to build an understanding of the important role that literacy will play in their lives.
