Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever felt like you're sitting in Charlie Brown's classroom when your listening to your teacher read? All you can make out is the, "Whomp wa wa wa wa." ? Well, this is nothing new to my Special Education students. Some of my students are diagnosed as ADD, Dyslexic, Learning Disorder, Autistic or a combination of diagnosis. It's my duty to find strategies, tools and manipulatives to make sure that they can put meaning to these jumbled up sounds and words.

My first through fourth grade Special Education students reside in the GREAT state of Texas and they're GREAT, unique and special (just like the state, of course).

My kiddos are a little more special so they have IEP's (Individualized Education Plans). IEP's are goals set for that particular child that can be mastered with the correct strategies, skills, assistance or manipulatives.

My Project

Being a Special Education teacher it is my job to do whatever I can to get my students to learn. My kids need Samsung Tablets so they are able to use a new computer program that our school district is piloting. The computer program will read anything on the computer screen or tablet out loud to the kids. If a child is given a story to read all they have to do is take a picture of the story and click on a certain button and the whole story will be read to them.

This cool technology will alleviate pressure on the child and teacher by allowing the child to complete their assignment without assistance from the teacher or a classmate.

This in turn boosts the child's self esteem and outlook on learning because they CAN do it all by themselves.

They can also use the tablets to play sight word race games, e-mail pen pals, or play sequencing games. They will also double as a communication tool for my ESL (English Second Language) students as the new computer/tablet program translates all information on the screen to the child's native language.

I not only teach struggling readers/learners I also work with children that have trouble getting their thoughts out of their brain and onto paper. This is why I need conversation starters, rhyming houses and reading trackers. These reading and writing tools will help get them on the right track.

I'm a firm believer of the better you understand, the more you learn. My goal is to provide all of the tools that my students need to be successful and to let them know that they CAN do it!
