Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While they come from a variety of backgrounds, many of my students are first generation English language learners. Many will also be the first in their family to go to college.

Students at our school are hopeful and determined, in spite of often daunting challenges that are in their way.

Some come from the most dire of socioeconomic situations, but they still come to school every day ready to learn. One of the biggest goals we have here in the middle school is to broaden the horizons of our students. The greater their awareness of the world outside of their immediate life, the greater their desire to succeed in school.

My Project

This year is the first year I have looped with my students. The students I taught in 7th grade are all now in my 8th grade class. Over the year and a half I have taught these students, we read the first three volumes of the Ms. Marvel series (the first two in 7th grade, the third in 8th). Since we started using the graphic novels, I have seen immense improvement in many of my struggling readers. Many of those students who started 7th grade with telling me that they disliked reading have enjoyed the adventures of Ms. Marvel and her allies. This is also supported by metrics. Nearly 20% more students in this group now read at grade level.

The fourth book (which is the final of the series's original run) will serve as a capstone for the students.

We need 29 copies of the fourth volume of the Ms. Marvel series. After they finish it, the students will track how Ms. Marvel has evolved from a girl who is unsure of herself and her place in the world to a young lady with great promise. The students will go back through the previous volumes and write about how she changed and what factors led to her change. Then, they will compare those changes to themselves. My goal is for students to see how they've grown and go onto high school confident and prepared.
