Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in Title I school in downtown of Staten Island, NY. The area mostly consists of low-income/high poverty families. Many of my students are performing far below expected grade level. Our school struggles with getting parents involved into their childrens' education and school activities. My students are very sweet and are excited about learning new skills and strategies.
Not only that my students come from low-income homes, but my school has a very limited budget.
The school doesn't have a budget for purchasing new materials. Therefore, many of our materials are in poor condition and scarce of. My goal is to make this school year the best one yet for my studetns by providing them with the best resources and foundational writing, reading, and math skills.
My Project
These books will encourage my students to read daily and share their abilities with their family members. Having books on their reading levels in their book baggies daily, will help my students reach their reading goals.
They'll be able to read these books in class during independent reading time, buddy reading, and take home for additional practice.
My students will feel special by having new and clean books to flip through. Most of our books have been damaged over the past 7 years and students get discoured seeing pencil markings and ripped pages. The variety of genres will motivate my students to pick up the next one.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
