I'm calling this a "Take 2" project because I already purchased this book and used it with students in another district. I'm now working with a much different student demographic, but the need is still there. I plan to use these materials with a group of high school students taking Earth and Environmental Science. This is an elective science class that helps them meet their required number of science credits to graduate from high school.
Students in today's society have a hard time viewing environmental issues as something they can actually have an impact on.
They have a hard time relating because the problem already seems insurmountable. At the same time, they've lived in this set of circumstances for their entire lives, and nothing really drastic or terrible has happened to them. This makes it seem like all of the warnings are for naught. Additionally, the current political climate makes it difficult for students to separate issues that are traditionally associated with one party or another.
I am interested in reading this book with my class because it presents topics in a way that is specifically geared toward teenagers. Throughout the entire book, Hope Jahren discusses how each situation has changed and how drastically just in her own lifetime. It is helpful for students to see that these changes are happening in real time that they can relate to, not over a period of thousands of years. Additionally, most teenagers wouldn't necessarily choose to read informational text, but it is important for them to learn to choose reading from reputable sources to get reliable information.
