My students are high achievers who come from diverse backgrounds. In my regular education classroom I have 20 first-graders who have diverse learning needs, but for the most part they are bright, curious, hands-on learners who all love to read and be read to. Reading is an important and favorite time in our classroom.
"Children need to be able to see their race, culture, family dynamics, neighborhoods, and experiences, as well as their triumphs and tribulations, represented in books" -LLL & KK.
The goal of this project is to bring this books into our classroom library that represent all the students I teach.
My Project
After reading Laminack and Kelly's amazing book "Reading to Make a Difference" I took inventory of my classroom library to see what types of cultures, races, and family dynamics were being represented. I found that I had many holes in my library such as: unlikely friends, coping with loss, and crossing boarders.
"We must create safe spaces where students can engage in critical conversations about topic that arise in literature and life" -LLL & KK.
By filling the holes in my classroom library I will create windows and doors for my students to open and I will help them engage in critical conversations.
