My Students
As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this January, my students have questions about the times that he lived in. My students would benefit from reading a novel set during the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties called "The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963."
My students come from various backgrounds and ethnicities.
These students are interested in learning about life during the Civil Rights Movement. They are amazed that years ago we might not have all been allowed to learn together. We celebrate our differences, and enjoy understanding more about each others cultures.
My Project
The book my students and I would like to read together is The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963. This book draws students into the story with vivid characters and setting. They will understand the times by following the story of one family. Not only will my students learn about history, they will improve their reading and writing skills. They will build their vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and writing skills as they respond to the book.
My students need to understand the hard work that others have done to help all people to have civil rights.
I want my students to pursue education, including college, to further themselves and the work that was started by others years ago. This novel set will help them down this pathway.
