Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are discouraged and the system has passed them along to the next Intensive Reading teacher year after year.
How can we close the literacy achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed in their reading class?
Every school year the data indicates that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at my middle school. The students in my classroom come with various learning and emotional disabilities. Many of my students came into my class with primary and elementary reading levels. The state may have deemed them as a "Low Level 1 Reader," but to me I still them as my own children.
My Project
My students are enrolled in Intensive Reading Plus (System 44/ Read 180 Next Generation) and it is designed for striving readers reading below grade level. It prepares students for success on exit exams and moves them to graduation and a promising future! This course provides personalized learning progression and explicit instruction designed to engage students in reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening.
The donations to this project will help to increase my students' fluency and reading ability.
When the program is done with fidelity, students raise their reading level by two grade levels. Unfortunately, my students have been unable to complete the required 20 minutes of computer usage time towards their individualized instruction. The program is set up with three rotations: small group, independent reading, and computer usage. I've been able to complete 2 of the out 3 rotations and I'm getting discouraged because I haven't seen much progress with their fluency. Networking with other teachers, I seen how much progress has been made in their classrooms and I want that for my students, too!
