Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with the most amazing kiddos. They are smart, hardworking and beautiful, young people. They also happen to have learning differences and need more support to access the general education curriculum.

All of my students are neurodivergent and have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Each IEP is a plan that includes goals and accommodations to help a student meet individual outcomes or goals beyond their current skills.

Additionally, my students live in East Oakland, California, and face many obstacles including poverty, homelessness, learning English, drugs, and violence. Despite all of these factors working against them, they continue to preserve by attending classes, engaging with their peers, and working towards a better future for themselves and their families.

This project contains books that feature characters who have disABILITIES. It is so important for my students to see themselves represented in a positive light, in literature. These narratives will encourage my students to embrace their differences and see their uniqueness not as a deficit but as their power!
