Reading to Change Our World!

My students need Scholastic magazines that will bring real-world current events to life in ways most meaningful to them and study guides to share during small-group tasks.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Oliva's classroom raised $911

My Students

My students are incredibly bright and have an enormous capacity to learn, to work diligently, and to succeed! I wish to match their incredible efforts with the best possible resources here in our learning community. At this time, when critical thinking is often disregarded in favor of 'alternative facts', my students and I are trying our best each day to promote the crafting of logical claims and the citation of relevent evidence. We would be so grateful for your consideration!

My Project

Scholastic magazine subscriptions will help my students to access information about significant current events from all over the world! Each student will have access to his/her own magazine during one class day. We will then pass these on to students in later block classes.

These valuable texts will serve as shared resources during small-group preparation for whole-group debates pertaining to various historical and geographical issues.

The student publication 'Choices', for example, will help my middle-schoolers to learn about some of the many diverse perspectives held by their neighbors pertaining to a particular issue.

We will share these texts weekly in our lessons on comprehension, critical thinking, empathy, social responsibility, argumentative writing, and public speaking.
