My students need 17 leveled fiction and nonfiction books as well as big books to increase our classroom library and create lifelong readers.

My Students
There is nothing better than picking up a great book and not wanting to put it back down. When you become a fluent, comprehensive reader, it's only a small push to become a lifelong reader who loves picking up a new book and learning about the characters, plot, and details found in the pages.
With my first grade students, it is important to create a balanced literacy atmosphere in the classroom to ensure that they love reading.
We use a leveled reading system that allows students to read and become proficient in their reading level in order to comprehend text and move on to the next level. The problem is we do not have many lower levels, which is where most of the students start out on. If they cannot start on their own level, it is much harder to become proficient and conquer the next level. My students come from low-income households that might not have much access to books in their homes. There is never a read-aloud or oral story that my students do not absolutely cling to. They LOVE to hear stories and they are always asking to go and read books. They are on their way to becoming those lifelong reading enthusiasts and we just need a few more materials to really solidify those aspirations.
My Project
With the leveled reading books, I will be able to ensure that my students are reading on their levels and able to succeed. Shared reading is also a big part of our classroom community, however we are lacking in big books. In fact, we do not have any fiction big books that would allow my students to engage in those shared reading activities. The big book theme packets would allow me to bring dramatic reading into the classroom using props and masks. The students can be engaged in their reading and really let it resonate with them. We will also be able to practice fluency, decoding, and comprehension techniques with the big books.
Reading is an integral part of not only every subject in the classroom, but also most aspects of our outside lives.
Building the skills to become lifelong readers and reading enthusiasts is challenging without the proper materials. Your donations will allow my students to really love reading and get lost in the stories that I can share with them. Any additional materials make an amazing impact on the classroom and these materials will really allow my students to become star readers.
